Journal covers Strickler's time as a prisoner of war after the Battle of Gettysburg on Johnson's Island near Sandusky, Ohio. In addition to descriptions of conditions at prisons along the way, particularly at Fort McHenry and Fort Delaware, he includes letters from his roommates on Johnson's Island, religious thoughts, debate topics, poems and names of other prisoners.
